Chicago Red Stars 1-0 San Diego Wave
BRIDGEVIEW, IL—Both teams were missing several key players both to injury and the upcoming Women’s World Cup. In fact, the Red Stars just had six subs on the bench. Yet, they were able to take advantage of the San Diego Wave not having Alex Morgan and eek out a 1-0 win at SeatGeek Stadium.
The Red Stars end a three-match losing streak while the Wave’s losing streak extends to three.
No Alex Morgan or Kailen Sheridan for the Wave, but they had three former Red Stars in the lineup in Rachel Hill, Makenzy Doniak, and Danielle Colaprico. Hill had a golden chance in the 17th minute with only Emily Boyd to beat, but Hill would shoot it off the goal post.
The Red Stars would have a shot hit woodwork four minutes later through Ella Stevens.
The Wave thought they took the lead in the 41st minute through Doniak, but VAR determined that Taylor Kornieck was in an offside position in the buildup and the goal was disallowed.
Just before halftime, Tatumn Milazzo sent a cross into the area and it was met by Stevens for what turned out to be the only score of the match.
From there, the Red Stars defense stepped up and prevented the Wave from equalizing. Emily Boyd would make four saves on the evening. While the defense came up with some timely blocks and interventions to preserve the win.
For Red Stars head coach Chris Petrucelli, this performance was a long time coming this season.
“You saw it coming. Over the last few weeks, we’ve been getting better and better,” said Petrucelli. “There was a time we were down and out. I felt like it was coming. We were close last week and we got it tonight. Resilient given the season that we’ve had and all that we’ve been through.
“They were in it right from the start. As it wore on, they started to believe that they could win and I think it’s a huge, huge piece; and by the second half, they were sure they were going to win.”
The Red Stars will travel to Houston to take on the Dash on Friday night. Kickoff is at 7:30pm on Paramount+.
