Red Stars Defeat Gotham to Go Top in the NWSL

HARRISON, NJ—Both teams were missing their international players to World Cup Qualifying, but the Chicago Red Stars would miss theirs less as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Gotham FC at Red Bull Arena. The win vaults the Red Stars to the top of the NWSL table overnight and are now unbeaten in their last eight matches.

Gotham continues their pattern of losing every match where they concede a goal and not score one of their own and winning when vice-versa.

Gotham started fast and had a furious first ten minutes with Cameron Tucker coming closest in that period. Six minutes later, however, they fell a goal behind as Tatumn Milazzo waltzed her way into the area and sent a low cross flicked on by Ella Stevens and was finished by Sarah Luebbert from close range.

The Red Stars doubled their lead in the 25th minute as Milazzo fed Vanessa DiBernardo who scored from just outside the area. It was DiBernardo’s first goal of the regular season.

Emily Boyd, deputizing for Alyssa Naeher, made four saves on the evening including one in the 62nd minute on Gina Lewandowski, playing in her final professional match, from point blank range off a free kick.

Stevens would get her goal in the 84th minute off a feed from Yuki Nagasato to complete the scoring.

The Red Stars return home on Sunday, July 10th, to face North Carolina Courage at SeatGeek Stadium. Kickoff is at 5pm on Paramount+.
