Red Stars clinch a playoff spot with win in Houston

Three points was all the Chicago Red Stars needed to secure a spot in the 2017 NWSL Playoffs. Most importantly, they got the points by outplaying the Dash in a spectacular first half in Houston. The Dash, who played at home for the first time in 41 days due to Hurricane Harvey, wanted to have a positive result in front of its fans. However, Chicago’s game plan, which included a strong high pressure, created many chances in attack for the Midwest team.

Chicago scored twice in the first twenty minutes of the match, and even though Houston scored the 2-1 via a PK, another penalty kick, right before the first half ended, gave the 3-1 lead to the Red Stars after the first 45. In the second half a fighting Houston team tried to come back, but not even a great goal by Rachel Daly was enough for the Dash.

Now, Houston, which was already eliminated from a playoff contention before the match, will travel south to play NC Courage in Edinburg, Texas. This match was rescheduled and relocated due to flooding disaster the city suffered a few weeks ago. The decision to relocate the match was controversial among fans who wanted to see their team one more time at home. We need to remember the Dash also played a home match in Frisco, Texas because of the same reason.

On the other hand, Chicago will travel to Portland for their season finale. This match will serve as a parameter of how a potential semifinal will be since Portland has already clinched a home playoff match.
