New York will return home Sunday, May 14th for another three game homestand after dropping points against Kansas City and Philadelphia last week. While the Red Bulls look to reverse their fortunes at home, there have been some key developments which could have ramifications on the squad.
Midfield standout Tyler Adams has been named to Tab Ramos’ United States roster for the 2017 Under-20 World Cup. Adams is currently participating in the fitness camp, ultimately facing his first test of the tournament on May 22nd against Ecuador. With the tournament lasting until June 11th (that is if the U.S. makes it that far), the Red Bulls will be missing a key element in their midfield.
Sean Davis will fill the central midfield role alongside Felipe in Adams’ absence, having his first real opportunity of the 2017 campaign to make a lasting impression on the team. Manager Jesse Marsch noted earlier in the week that the team is “excited for him [Adams] to have a big opportunity and we know he’ll do well”. If you weren’t aware of the fact that Adams was the go-to central midfielder, it sounds like you have confirmation now. If Davis can deliver the same dynamic play he put on display last year in Dax McCarty’s absence, there will be stiff competition for the starting role when Adams returns.

On Wednesday, news broke that journeyman striker Anatole Abang had his loan with Finnish side SJK Seinajoki terminated. The reason? SJK cites Abang’s attitude as not compatible with the team’s mentality. During his short tenure in Finland, Abang managed six appearances without a goal.
Where does he go from here? With the plethora of talent on the first-team roster, it is unlikely he will feature. The USL team also looks stacked and finding a place for Abang in the Red Bull organization is becoming increasingly difficult.
At the end of April, New York announced the signing of USL keeper Evan Louro to an MLS contract. Having risen through the ranks of the academy, the homegrown Louro earned five starts for the USL team before being an official member of the MLS side. In his tenure with Red Bull II, Louro managed one clean sheet and eight saves.

A goalkeeper who puts his body on the line for the sake of the game. Clearly he’s cut from the same cloth as Luis Robles.
He may just find a place in the team one day if he can put on displays like that.
