Colorado Rapids 2-3 San Jose Earthquakes
COMMERCE CITY, CO–All five goals in this match were scored in a span of 39 minutes (including the six minutes of first half stoppage time) on a rainy night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. There were three other strikes that got disallowed for offside on the Rapids. The Rapids got the first two goals before the Earthquakes got the next three as the latter nabbed their first away win of the season and moved off the foot of the Western Conference table pending Sunday’s Portland-Seattle match. The Rapids drop to sixth in the West with LAFC’s win over Vancouver.
After the Rapids had two goals disallowed for offside, they finally got on the board in the 33rd minute on a corner flicked in by Rafael Navarro. The Rapids got more good luck in the 42nd minute as Omar Fernandez’s shot took a deflection and passed William Yarbrough.
However a couple minutes later, San Jose struck against the run of play as Amahl Pellegrino pulled one back after Zak Steffen made the initial save on Jeremy Ebobisse’s shot. The Rapids would have a third goal disallowed in the fourth minute of first half stoppage time–again for offside on Navarro. Two minutes later, Hernan Lopez would score on the volley and that did count as the equalizer for San Jose.
In the 66th minute, Vitor Costa would find an unmarked Cristian Espinoza and the latter would beat Steffen far post and the Quakes would hold on for the comeback victory. The Rapids remain home on Wednesday when they host Vancouver Whitecaps. Kickoff is at 7:30pm MT on Apple TV as part of the MLS Season Pass.
