Bayern return to the scene of where their UEFA Champions League run ended 154 days ago. They have virtually a full squad to select from in what arguably will be their toughest contest in the group stage. The two away trips in league play required Bayern to score in the last ten minutes to get a win.
Carlo Ancelotti has three wins and two draw against Atletico from previous stops Chelsea and Real Madrid in the Champions League. The goal is at least one point here after eight straight competitive wins so far this season allowing just one goal.
“Atlético are certainly our toughest opponents in the group. The fact they’ve made the final twice in the last three years speaks for itself. They’re a top European team and one of the strongest teams in the Champions League,” said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rumminege to the club website. “Carlo knows Atlético Madrid better than any of the rest of us,” Rummenigge said, “our goal is to qualify for the Round of 16, ideally as group winners. For that we’ll need a good result tomorrow.”
This one of three matches of a de facto Bundesliga-La Liga challenge in Matchday 2 with Dortmund drawing 2-2 with Real Madrid at the Signal Iduna while Borussia Mönchengladbach host Barcelona on Wednesday.
