UPDATE: Kudo suffered a fractured jaw and is scheduled to undergo surgery. He would like thank all supporters, fans, family, friends, and members of the soccer community for their outpouring of support. There is no current timeline on his return. The club will continue to provide updates as he progresses in his recovery.
VANCOUVER, BC – In the 11th minute of Wednesday’s match between Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Chicago Fire, Japanese striker Masato Kudo was involved in a heavy collision with Fire goalkeeper Matt Lampson. Kudo was left bloodied after biting his tongue and lip on the play, which made for a scary scene at BC Place.
Fortunately, players and trainers from both sides were quick to respond.
Kudo was attended to for several minutes, with players from both teams and Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson near his side, before leaving the pitch on a cart. The 26-year-old was then taken to Vancouver General Hospital for further evaluation. He was alert and aware.
The ‘Caps won the match 2-1 on the strength of two goals from Blas Pérez, including a stunning bicycle kick in the 89th minute.
“Sometimes, it’s not about football,” said Robinson, who was off to visit Kudo at the hospital after the match. “I let the guys know, it’s a special day for Blas, but make sure you all send a message to Masato and his wife, because he’s a massive part of this football club and he’ll feel that we’re right behind him.”
