Portland Timbers lost their season opener against a strong and disciplined Minnesota United in their 2020 MLS season opener. The match seemed almost a repeat to the preseason match disputed just a week ago at Providence Park in Portland, OR. Then, Portland lost 4-2, with many reserves on the field.
The game started with a very aggressive first half by The Portland Timbers that ended with no goals. In the second half, the Timbers were neutralized by a very disciplined and fit Minnesota.
It was Minnesota United who hit first with a goal by Kevin Molino in the 51st minute. Three minutes later, an action by United defender Ike Opara on Portland’s forward Felipe Mora was punished with a penalty. Portland’s star Diego Valeri skillfully equalized from the penalty spot and the match was level in the 56th minute.
The Portland Timbers pushed with more heart than play, but it was Minnesota who imposed its discipline and effectiveness. A superb match by United’s winger Ethan Finlay, who would serve the assist for Luis Amarilla’s goal on minute 76 and again to Kevin Molino two minutes later on 78 that sealed the result.
Tonight’s score certainly leaves the home side with more questions than answers. After a shaky preseason, the Portland Timbers haven’t seem to have found their form in this first 2020 season match.
In exactly one week, March 8th, Portland will have another opportunity in front of their fans facing Nashville in their inaugural year in MLS.
