Portland Timbers battled back to a 1-1 tie against a very tough opponent, one of the biggest teams of the Liga MX, Club América. The Liga MX giants took the lead advantage when Roger Martínez scored a penalty during injury time in the first half, one minute past the 45 mark. The Portland Timbers would find their goal in the very last action of the game after the referee Mario Escobar called a penalty during the 4 minutes of injury time called by the fourth official. Felipe Mora would tally the penalty in a tie that felt more like a victory when the numerous fans of the visiting team where already celebrating the victory.
