The Portland Thorns was declared winner of the Women’s International Champions Cup 2021 after their victory in the final over Olympique Lyonnais with a late strike by forward Morgan Weaver in the 87 minute. The Thorns forward had subbed in late in the game.
The final mostly was kept scoreless even as there were numerous chances on both sides. The first half saw a very dangerous Olympique Lyonnais, who looked much more dangerous, and went to the break feeling disappointed.
The second half was a whole different beast. The Portland Thorns added to the field the talent of their olympians, Lindsey Horan, Crystal Dunn, and olympic gold medal, Christine Sinclair and took the control of the match.
Olympique Lyonnais held the Thorns push, and had a few opportunities of their own, but what looked inevitable came from the freshness of Morgan Weaver, on a one one with Lyon’s keeper Christiane Endler after being assisted by Thorns defender Christen Westphal.
