Poor effort and interesting referee decisions result in Revolution 2-1 loss to 10-man Inter Miami

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution (7-3-2, 23 pts.) were defeated in a 2-1 match versus the Inter Miami CF (5-0-6, 15 pts.) in an MLS Match on Saturday, May 13th.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, FL to a crowd of roughly 17,349.

The team started their lineup in a 4-3-3 formation with Đorđe Petrović starting in net with a backline of (left back) DeJuan Jones, (center backs) Dave Romney, and Andrew Farrell, along with (right back) Brandon Bye. The defensive midfield consisted of Noel Buck (left midfield), Matt Polster (right midfield). Captain Carles Gil played ahead of them in the central role. (center attacking midfield) The attacking roles were manned by Emmanuel Boateng (left attacking wing), Latif Blessing (right winger), and Bobby Wood as the lone striker.

The match began with New England starting from the center circle. Forward Bobby Wood played the ball backward to Matt Polster, who switched it to the left side of the field.

The first moment of the match came in the first 5 minutes when #9 Leo Campana found space in behind the Revolution defense and managed a left-footed shot that went just wide.

In the 7th minute, Inter Miami took the 1-0 lead.

Following a right footed pass by #41 David Ruiz, he found Robert Taylor the right flank. Taylor sent a ball into the box that was won by #15 Ryan Sailor into the 6-yard box. With the ball bouncing and not cleared, #30 Benjamin Cremaschi then took a touch and the ball bounced once more. The ball was then taken down by #9 Leo Campana to set up #41 David Ruiz. He took a one time shot that deflected off of center back Dave Romney and into the Revolution goal past Petrović.

The first chance for New England came in the 15th minute when forward Bobby Wood’s outside the foot effort went just wide of the right post.

In the 17th minute, the Revolution thought they had leveled the match.

Defender Brandon Bye found midfielder Noel Buck atop the 18-yard box. He trapped the ball, past one defender, cut inside the area and unleashed a left footed shot that went past Inter Miami goalkeeper #1 Drake Callender into the far post.

Upon a lengthy Video-Review, the goal was chalked offside as they deemed midfielder Latif Blessing was blocking the view of Callender.

6 minutes later, the Revolution did manage to level the match.

Defender DeJuan Jones found midfielder Matt Polster. He then split a pass between two defenders to find Carles Gil. He then took 5 touches and unleashed a shot into the bottom right-hand corner past Callender to level the match 1-1.

In the 37th minute, Inter Miami midfielder #41 David Ruiz entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a challenge on Carles Gil.

Just before halftime, Inter Miami scored once again, and took another 1 goal advantage.

#41 David Ruiz played the ball wide to #2 DeAndre Yedlin. He then took on DeJuan Jones and played a ball toward Ruiz who slide tackle challenge won the ball from Latif Blessing. He got up and played a square pass to a wide-open #17 Josef Martinez who smashed the ball past Petrović for the 2-1 lead.

In the 45th minute, Inter Miami forward #17 Josef Martinez entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a challenge on Carles Gil. Following the yellow card, there was no more action, and the match entered halftime with Inter Miami leading the New England Revolution 2-1.

In the 60th minute, Inter Miami midfielder #16 Robert Taylor entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a challenge on Brandon Bye.

In the 66th minute, Head Coach Bruce Arena made three changes by substituting Bobby Wood, Emmanuel Boateng, and Latif Blessing for Giacomo Vrioni, Esmir Bajraktarevic, and Justin Rennicks.

In the 78th minute, Inter Miami defender Christopher McVey entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for fouling Carles Gil. Though, this was mistaken identity, as #41 David Ruiz was the person who fouled Carles Gil and should’ve been sent off, in retaliation for the consistent fouling, midfielder Matt Polster shoved Ruiz.

In the 79th minute, Revolution midfielder Matt Polster entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for shoving #41 David Ruiz.

In the 80th minute, #41 David Ruiz received what should have been his 3rd yellow card of the match and was sent off with a red card for fouling Carles Gil.

In the 85th minute, Inter Miami forward #9 Leo Campana entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for fouling Carles Gil.

In the 85th minute, Head Coach Bruce Arena made his fourth and final change of the match by substituting Matt Polster for Jozy Altidore.

In the 87th minute, Revolution midfielder Noel Buck entered the referee’s booklet with a yellow card for a foul on#14 Corentin Jean.

With little to no action following Buck’s yellow card, the match ended 2-1.

The New England Revolution (7-3-2, 23 pts.) head to Chester, Pennsylvania to face their rivals, the Philadelphia Union (5-2-4 17 pts.) in an MLS Match on Saturday, May 20th. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
