In their third match of the week, the New England Revolution would seek revenge following a controversial draw in their last meeting with the Philadelphia Union. The Revolution would accomplish this and hold onto a 2-1 win.
The Revolution would take the field for a second consecutive match without leader and playmaker Carles Gil. Following a 0-0 draw in their Wednesday night matchup, the Revs would look to create more offense without the current MLS assist leader in Gil.
An early chance for the Revs was nearly headed home in the second minute by Adam Buksa, but ultimately was unable to find the back of the net.
In the 10th minute, it was the Revs who struck first. A beautiful give and go play between Matt Polster and Tommy McNamara was finished off with a curling shot around goalkeeper Andre Blake. This marked Polster’s first goal in a Revs uniform.
The Union would answer before halftime as Paxten Aaronson, in his first career start, would curl a shot into the top corner past Matt Turner. This marked the 17 year old’s first MLS goal and shows a glimpse of how promising this youngster is.
Following a string of saves by Turner, the Revs were able to answer take the lead before halftime. Tajon Buchanan would draw a penalty shot in the 39th minute. The initial shot by Gustavo Bou was pushed away by Blake, but the rebound found it’s way back to the Argentine who made no mistake in tucking it home. This would be Bou’s 11th goal of the 2021 campaign.
The second half would feature both teams creating scoring chances early on, but both Turner and Blake would stand up to the challenges.
A 90th minute chance would come for the Union, but the shot was deflected by Turner off the post and away to safety
The Revolution would hold on to a 2-1 win and remain atop of the Eastern Conference as well as the Supporters Shield race. 40 points puts the Revs in a commanding spot over the Eastern Conference with the next best being Orlando City with 30. Up next for New England is a trip to Toronto for a Saturday match.
