VANCOUVER, BC–Even though their own playoff hopes hang by a thread, Vancouver potentially dealt Seattle Sounders’ hopes for a 14th straight year in the playoffs a fatal blow as the Whitecaps defeated the Sounders, 2-1, at BC Place. It was the first win for the Whitecaps over the Sounders in the last 16 meetings between the two sides.

The Whitecaps did all their damage in an eight-minute span. Perdo Vite scored off a cross from Ryan Gauld in the 29th minute and Julian Gressel scored off the volley in the 37th. Will Bruin pulled one back for Seattle in the 89th minute, but it was not enough as the Sounders may be missing the playoffs for the first time in their MLS history.

The Whitecaps are now in ninth in the West, three points out of a playoff spot with two matches to play. They need to pass to Real Salt Lake and LA Galaxy (who have a match in hand) to reach 7th position. The Sounders are now four points adrift in 10th place with three matches to play.
