FOXBOROUGH, MA–This was the proverbial and literal result that helps neither side as New England Revolution and Chicago Fire FC played to a goalless draw that keeps both teams out of the playoff places–New England one point adrift in ninth and the Fire five points adrift in 13th.

VAR was not New England’s friend this evening. First, it awarded penalty to the Fire after Henry Kessler handled a ball in the box. However, Djordje Petrovic would stop Chris Mueller’s spot kick. A couple minutes later, Tommy McNamara thought he had put the Revolution ahead, but VAR saw that the ball had gone out of bounds before Dejuan Jones sent his cross in, disallowing the goal.

After that, neither team made a case that they belonged in the playoffs and both teams had a share a point in a match that both needed three.
