The late season, mid-week game against FC Dallas had all the markings of a real game. Having clinched a playoff spot, the Philadelphia Union was looking for 3 points to secure as many home games as possible. Dallas, currently teetering in 9th place in the MLS West, also could have used the points to ensure a playoff berth.
Kudos to Quinn Sullivan, who scored the Union’s lone goal in the 25th minute. Sullivan was cutting toward goal on a quick counter attack when Kai Wagner gifted him a picture perfect pass, between Dallas defenders, which Sullivan collected and directed into the lower left corner of the Dallas goal.
It was only ten minutes later that Dallas’s Alan Velasco scored from outside Philadelphia’s box to the right side of the uprights.
Dallas came dangerously close to winning the the game. Late in the second half, Paul Arriola scored after the ball lumbered around in from of Philadelphia’s goal. The goal was rescinded after VAR review for a hand ball by Arriola.
