On Thursday evening, the Philadelphia Union defeated FC Cincinnati 1-0 at home in front of a vocal Philadelphia crowd. Cincinnati — a team that shares some of Philadelphia’s DNA — played well. In the end, it was one play that was the difference maker, with Leon Flach (who had shot only 4 shots on goal for the season) being the unlikely hero.
At about the 63rd minute, Dániel Gazdag passed to Jack McGlynn, who looked through but flicked a back-handed short pass with his left foot back to Gazdag. Gazdag passed through to Julián Carranza, and Carranza passed back to Gazdag, who was then pulled down in the box by Cincinnati’s Júnior Moreno. Mikael Uhre corralled the loose ball and sent it left to an open Leon Flash, who shot into an equally open left side of the Cincinnati goal.
Philadelphia held on for the remaining 30 minutes to cement the win.
