The Houston Dash started the year off on the right foot as they defeated the Chicago Red Stars 2-0 to open the fifth NWSL season. Even though the Windy City team had some good chances throughout the 90 minutes, the home team had more opportunities converted into goals to get the first three points of the year.
The Dash featured a fast attacked where wings Rachel Daly and Kealia Ohai created many chances for the Houston team. The dynamic and vertical offensive game plan worked out for the home team, when in the 14th minute, Ohai opened the score for the Dash after a great pass from Amber Brooks. The second goal came in at the 80th minute when Rachel Daly shot outside the box for the final 2-0.
On the other side, Chicago struggled to control the ball in midfield. This was crucial for their poor production in offense. Christen Press was the only one that generated some danger for the visiting team, although it was without much luck. Despite the loss, the Red Stars’ defense, which is led by defender Julie Johnston Ertz and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, was the stronger side for the away team.
Chicago will try to get their first three points of the year when they host Kansas City in April 22nd, whereas Houston will be traveling to the Emerald City to play against the Seattle Reign.
