NWSL Calls Off Weekend Matches Amid Abuse Allegations

CHICAGO, IL–The National Women’s Soccer League has called off this weekend’s action amid allegations of abuse and demands from the NWSL Players’ Association. This follows The Athletic’s investigation of now-former North Carolina Courage coach Paul Riley’s alleged sexual misconduct towards players both at the Courage and previously at Portland Thorns as well as allegations against the Washington Spirit that led to the sacking of coach Richie Burke and calls for owner Steve Baldwin to sell the team.

“This week, and much of this season, has been incredibly traumatic for our players and staff, and I take full responsibility for the role I have played. I am so sorry for the pain so many are feeling,” NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird said in a statement. “Recognizing that trauma, we have decided not to take the field this weekend to give everyone some space to reflect.”

This has led to widespread anger in the soccer community, not just at the clubs involved, but with the league itself for failing to do more to protect players. It has put the league in a difficult position despite experience growth in terms of viewership and two new teams set to enter the league in 2022.

In addition to the abuse allegations, the NWSL faced criticisms to have their Championship Match in Portland kick off at 9am Pacific Time just to be on CBS. There is eternally the issue of players having to engage in side-hustles as the league does not nearly pay them enough on their own plus the fact that some teams play in less-than-ideal settings.

The NWSL is now in a position where it really needs to address the many elephants in the room that are crowding out whatever goodwill it developed during the pandemic and after the 2019 Women’s World Cup. There will certainly be more to say in the days and weeks to come.
