Notes on Monday: Lack of Depth

0

THOUGHTS ON THE FIRE:  The Fire’s lack of depth clearly showed in its 3-0 loss to Columbus. Their lack of endurance clearly showed in their third match in a week. We will see if Dax McCarty can go Sunday against Houston after being subbed out at halftime, but I cannot help but feel that not adding to the depth of this club was an avoidable outcome. It’s games like that where you are counting the days until the Summer transfer window opens and hope Michael de Leeuw, Djordje Mihailovic, and Luis Solignac return to fitness and are able to add to the depth of this team.

The Fire do have promising youngsters and they will get better in time, but there’s just not enough quality with the team that is on the pitch and it’s exacerbated by not adding enough quality in the offseason.
THOUGHTS ON THE RED STARS:  The Red Stars still have a couple injury issues with Vanessa DiBernardo and Casey Short still out. Julie Ertz was back in the lineup and played 45 minutes. The Red Stars have a lot of pieces right now, but have yet to determine where some of them best fit at the moment. Head coach Rory Dames admitted that he does not know how best to use Sam Kerr as of yet.
Making the most of what they have and finding the best fit for those pieces will be key if the Red Stars are truly better than their coach’s opinion that they are the “sixth best” team in the league right now.
That’s all for now. More later
