2018 Record: 16-8-10, 56 points- lost in quarterfinals of the playoffs
Key Additions: Luis Barraza (goalkeeper), Alexandru Mitrita, Keaton Parks, Tony Rocha, Juan Pablo Torres (midfield)
Key Departures: Yangel Herrera, Rodney Wallace, Tommy McNamara ( Houston), Jo Inge Berget, David Villa
The Big Question: Can NYCFC replace David Villa’s goal production?
The loss of Villa puts NYCFC in a bind. They lost the focal point of their offense for the past four seasons and a huge source of goals. Last season Ismael Tajouri-Shradi and Maxi Moralez stepped in to fill the void when Villa got hurt and had to miss time. They need to continue that production in 2019 if the team has any hopes of a playoff run.
The new DP addition of Mitrita provides a quick pacey player with a rocket of a shot. He has shown in the preseason that he can score and score beautifully. If he can continue that success in MLS then the future could look bright indeed.
Position to keep an eye on: Striker
Exactly who will function as the team’s number nine is anyone’s guess. NYCFC did not add a true striker in the off season to replace the loss of Villa and Berget. They will likely play a false nine formation in most games, but they will need someone to step in and fill the void. Will Jonathan Lewis progress enoug to take over? Will Taty Casteleanos be the man for the job with his athletic ability and good touch? Or will the team sign a true striker before the season gets in full swing as suggested by Dome Torrent a few weeks ago? Time will tell.
Outlook:
NYCFC should be fairly successful this season if they can provide consistent play and adapt to Torrent’s style of play. The east is weakened this season with the loss of some key players and NYCFC should end up with around the same point total they had last year. It could go either way though. The team has basically a very sound defense and midfield returning from last season. If the team can find a way to replace Villa’s contribution to then the future looks bright. If not, then it could be a very dismal year at Yankee stadium.
