Suspected case of COVID-19 on Loons postpones match an hour before kickoff.

ST. PAUL, MN–Wednesday’s match between Minnesota United and Chicago Fire FC has been postponed after reports of a suspected positive test of the coronavirus (COVID-19) on Minnesota.

In a brief statement, Major League Soccer said the “match was postponed to allow for further testing and evaluation.” A new date and time for the match was not announced.

This is the second such match postponed for Minnesota United after Sunday’s match against FC Dallas was postponed due to positive cases of COVID-19.

Following Saturday’s tests, the Loons did not have any positives through Tuesday and indications pointed toward the scheduled kickoff. The Fire proceeded to the Twin Cities for the match, adhering to new protocols for same-day travel. However, after a suspected case on Minnesota, the match was postponed just over an hour before the scheduled kickoff.

“All of us need the reminder,” said Fire head coach Raphael Wicky after Sunday’s match against DC United. “We’re trying to do that. So far, we were very disciplined and we’re lucky, but it’s something we have to get used to. It’s not, OK, we have to do it for two more weeks, for three more weeks. Right now, it’s the normal life and we have to be disciplined and take this virus [seriously].”

The Fire’s next match is scheduled to take place at home against Sporting Kansas City. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30pm on Univision.
