Journalists as well as fans obviously had their own viewpoints about the dismissal of Sigi Schmid as head coach of Sounders FC.
Seattle Times’ Matt Pentz, interviewed by John Zielonka, said that:
“From the move to the 4-3-3 that never really came off to the inability to turn things around this season, I think that that issues here go far beyond that just n terms of … you look at this roster, … I’m not even entirely sure where they go from here with some of the veterans.
“Do you tear everything down and start anew? Maybe this is probably a sign that this is the first step in doing that.
“The problems are pretty systemic at this point. This move this morning is the first admission of that.”
Matt Pentz and Ari Liljenwall address the decision
Ari Liljenwall writes on Sounders FC for MLSSoccer.com. He told Zielonka:
“I was surprised and didn’t see it coming.
“I don’t think he should take all the blame. This is a roster that it was probably difficult to get a who;e lot out of at this point.
“I’m not necessarily sure I buy the notion that a different coach in here with the exact same roster would have flown into the playoffs seamlessly and it’s all Sigi Schmid’s fault how the season has gone. I don’t think that’s accurate. But at the same time, optics matter and at a certain point, you do have to make change for the sake of change.”
