Match report by Canada Soccer
Match Report:
Canada has wrapped up a successful eight-day men’s U-20 camp with a 2:1 win over their hosts England in Doncaster. Goals by Kadin Chung and Marco Bustos put Canada in front before the team “did well to dig in and fight for the victory.”
The Canada U-20 camp featured a mix of players at different ages, with U-20 Coach Rob Gale taking the opportunity to emphasize player development as part of Canada Soccer’s Men’s EXCEL Program. Young players mentored up with older players while the full group worked on building a culture within the program.
“We worked on creating a culture within the camp,” said Gale. “These boys faced quality this week and they have been first class – that’s what led to the result.”
Canada played England in a closed-door exhibition on 24 March, but fell 1:4 after conceding three goals in the last half hour. Jordan Hamilton was Canada’s goal scorer in this first match. In the second match on 27 March, Gale fielded a younger starting XI, opting for some of Canada’s best young talents regardless of age.
“We told them to believe in their talent, to express themselves, and to just play,” said Gale. “It is a good experience for this group of players.”
As this group featured a mix of players born between 1996 and 2000, it was not the proper squad that Gale can feature in the qualification process for next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017. That squad will need to feature players born 1997 or later, with the dates for the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship yet to be announced. For this particular camp, Canada decided to provide their young players with valuable international experience while also fostering culture and continuity across the youth program.
Canada Soccer’s Men’s EXCEL Program channels our nation’s exceptional players into the best soccer environments. The Canada Soccer Pathway works in collaboration with our provincial and territory partners as well as the professional clubs and academies. For Canada’s elite players, the program emphasizes player development on the pathway to representing Canada’s Men’s National Team in international soccer.
