English Premier League champions Manchester City are heading to Soldier Field on Friday, July 20th, to take on Bundesliga power Borussia Dortmund. It will be the first of three matches City will play in the United States this Summer as part of the International Champions Cup. Kickoff for the match will be at 8pm.
Man City will also play Juventus at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey on July 25th and then Bayern Munich, Pep Guardiola’s former team, on July 28th at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Pep was in Chicago in 2008 when he was managing Barcelona as they defeated Chivas, 5-3.
“Our previous tour of the United States last summer provided a great platform for the team to kick off its current campaign and we are excited to confirm our plans for this year,” said Manchester City’s chief operating officer, Omar Berrada, to the club website.
“This year’s visit to the US will be extra special for the Club as we get to combine our men’s and women’s tours for the first time when they both play matches in Miami.
“Manchester City has a great following in the United States with a growing and passionate fanbase.
“The team is looking forward to meeting and playing in front of thousands of our US fans for what promises to be a fantastic tour.”
The issue on July 20th will be how many of Man City’s stars will be available for the tour since this game will take place five days after the World Cup Final in Russia with quite a few Man City stars expected to feature in the World Cup. Dortmund may face similar issues, though not as many.
Dortmund currently sit fourth in the Bundesliga and are looking to preserve a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. They are four points clear of 5th-place RB Leipzig and are level on points with Bayer Leverkusen. They will also play Liverpool in Charlotte on July 22nd and Benfica in Pittsburgh on July 25th. Dortmund, featuring US international Christian Pulisic, will play LAFC on May 22nd at the new Banc of California Stadium.
“The invitation to participate in the ICC once again is, according to BVB Chief Executive Officer Hans Joachim Watzke, “a distinction that we are really happy about. Becoming ever more closely involved in this tournament as an important player within it alongside the best known and most successful football clubs in the world underlines what high regard Borussia Dortmund is held in.
“The club has previously undertaken part of its pre-season training in Asia these last few years but is “now looking forward to travelling to the USA with the senior squad for the first time. Christian Pulisic, the USA footballer of the year, will be the centre of attention as we hope to win new fans for Borussia Dortmund thanks to the friendly and approachable manner of all those representing the club”, explained BVB executive director Carsten Cramer.
Ticket information for the match at Soldier Field will be announced at a later date.
