The Portland Timbers are closing in on boosting its defensive backfield with a new center back in Peruvian born Miguel Araujo from Dutch Eredivisie League side FC Emmen.
Araujo, 28, has been called up by La Blanquirroja 28 times alongside Orlando City goalkeeper Pedro Gallese and midfielder Wilder Cartagena, San Jose Earthquakes left back Miguel Trauco, Seattle Sounders striker Raul Ruidiaz, and Atlanta United defender Luis Abram.
With the Major League Soccer transfer window opening on July 5th and going all the way through August 2nd, any club can sign any player to reinforce any of its positions and until then they can be registered with their new team.
As Araujo made his debut on July 13, 2011 with Cobresol moving to Sport Huancayo in January 2012 with 43 games played and scoring one goal. He then moved to Europe and to Serbian league giant Red Star Belgrade for four years and making his debut on October 19, 2013.
After Red Stars, he moved to Alianza Lima from 2014 to 2019 playing 130 games and scoring five goals with Peru’s so called giant as well participating in South America’s top tournament Copa Libertadores and making a brief stop with Club Atletico Talleres from Argentina’s top league.
On the international scene, Miguel Araujo has played with Peru’s U-17 and U-20 teams alongside being called for his national team 23 men squad for 2018 World Cup celebrated in Russia.
By joining the Portland Timbers, he will join the likes of Zac McGraw currently on international duty with Team Canada, Larrys Mabiala, and Dario Zuparic. He will become the club fourth center back upon his arrival.
So far, in the 2023 season the Portland Timbers (5-8-7, 22 points) are below the postseason spots, currently in tenth place and three points behind their Cascadia rivals the Vancouver Whitecaps.
