Leon 2-2 Vancouver Whitecaps (Leon win 16-15 on penalties)

VANCOUVER, BC–Leon and the Whitecaps finished 2-2 after 90 minutes, but then went through 19 rounds of penalties before Leon came away with the extra point in the group, 16-15, in the shootout.

Ivan Moreno put Leon ahead in the 23rd minute before Sergio Cordova scored a pair for the Whitecaps on either side of halftime. Elias Hernandez pulled Leon back level in the 77th minute with a shot from outside the area.

In Leagues Cup play, if the sides are level after 90 minutes, they go to penalties to determine who leaves with two points as opposed to one. This shootout would last 19 rounds. It was 8-8 after 11 rounds with both goalkeepers successful with their spot kicks. Both Rodolfo Cota and Yohei Takaoka were close to have to do it again, but the shootout ended after Borja Sanchez made his second spot kick after missing in round four while Luis Martins would strike his spot kick off the bar. That was his second miss of the shootout.
