Inter Miami has confirmed the signing of Leandro Gonzalez Pirez from Tijuana.
The MLS Cup and U.S Open Cup winning defender was acquired through Target Allocation Money with Miami also using its number one position in the allocation ranking.
“Leandro is a stalwart defender that has proven to not only be a great leader on and off the pitch, but he’s also determined to succeed and win championships,” said sporting director Paul McDonough
“He joins us in great form and is ready to contribute.”
The former Atlanta United star has traveled with the Herons to Orlando but he will not be eligible to compete in the MLS is Back tournament.
Once the regular season does finally resume, he is expected to form a center-back partnership with fellow Argentine Nicolas Figal at the heart of Inter’s defence.
In other news, Diego Alonso and his men have now touched down in Orlando and entered the MLS bubble at Disney’s ESPN World of Sports resort ahead of the MLS is Back tournament.
The team completed one final practice session in South Florida before setting off amid a backdrop of pink smoke and impassioned supporters ahead of their first game hosts and state rivals Orlando City on July 8.
“I think everyone is excited to play again,” said goalkeeper and captain Joel Robles. “We haven’t played in months and competing is something the guys are definitely up for.
“For me personally, I am ready to be back on the field to try to get points for Inter Miami.”
Speaking about the Herons’ aims for the competition, Robles added: “We want to get our first win.
“The first win in the history of this organisation and to advance, not only to play attractive and good soccer but to advance to the knockout stages.
“The entire team is excited.”
