LAFC’s six match unbeaten run ended Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 defeat to the Portland Timbers.

Meeting for the first time in history, it was a cagey match between Portland and LAFC. The Timbers controlled the first half and almost took the lead in the 9th minute when Fanendo Adi’s strike smacked off the crossbar. At the other end LAFC had their chance to break the deadlock when Carlos Vela picked out Latif Blessing who rounded Portland’s goalkeeper Jeff Antinella, but was only able to find the side netting.

After a scoreless first half, the Timbers took the lead in the 52nd minute. Cristhian Paredes was the first to react to the rebound of Diego Valeri’s free kick, and was able to sneak it pass LAFC goalkeeper Tyler Miller. It was the midfielder’s first goal in MLS.

LAFC were able to get back into the game with their equalizer in the 74th minute. Assisted by substitute Eduard Atuesta, Carlos Vela curled a beautiful shot over Jeff Antinella and into the top corner. “When I received the ball, I control and said, if I shoot there it’s a goal for sure.” said the Mexican international, who has done that more than once this season and leads his club with seven goals.

In the span of two minutes both sides had opportunities to seal all three points. Portland almost took the lead again in the 79th minute when Alvas Powell’s attempt off a corner kick was cleared off the line by LAFC defender Jordan Harvey. It looked as though LAFC might leave Providence Park with a point, but that wasn’t meant to be. In quick succession Diego Rossi had his shot saved by Antinella, which lead to a quick counter attack by Portland and forward Samuel Armenteros scored the winner for the Timbers in the 81st minute marking his first MLS career goal.

“It was a tough game for sure. I think our players pushed really hard in the second half.” said LAFC Head Coach Bob Bradley “We had a very good chance at 1-1 and directly off of our opportunity we didn’t shut down the counter and it continues and then we go down. So it’s not perfect, but in terms of strong effort on a tough day, I still have good things to say.”

With this victory Portland make it five in a row and have now won every single home match this season.

LAFC are still second in the Western Conference with 20 points just three behind leaders Sporting Kansas City. The Black and Gold return to the Banc of California stadium on Tuesday for their friendly against Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.
