It was vintage Los Angeles Galaxy news on Thursday.
The Galaxy upheld a long-standing tradition of bringing in big-name players onto its roster, as they announced they had acquired Brazilian midfielder Douglas Costa. Costa, currently on loan to Gremio from Juventus, will start his tenure on a six-month loan until his contract with Juventus expires at the conclusion of the Serie A season. Costa will then begin a one-and-a-half year contract with the Galaxy.
“Douglas is a world-class player and a proven champion at the highest level. His capacity to create and finish will add yet another level to our attack,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach Greg Vanney. “We are excited to integrate him into the team as we push toward the start of the season.”
Costa comes to Los Angeles after a lengthy and standout career playing for some of the best clubs in the world. Costa began his career with Gremio in 2008, then in 2010, Costa joined Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, where Costa fully established himself, making 141 appearances and scoring 29 goals. Costa parlayed his success with Shakhtar Donetsk into a move to Bayern Munich in 2015, where he made 50 appearances, scored eight goals and help Bayern win two Bundesliga titles. Costa was loaned to Juventus prior to the 2017-2018 season, and he made 31 appearances and helped them win its seventh straight league title. Costa’s move to Juventus became permanent, as he signed a four-year $40 million contract. Costa helped Juventus win two more league titles, then had loan stints with two of his former clubs, Bayern Munich in 2020-2021 and Gremio for the latter half of the Brazilian Seria A season, though his presence was not enough to prevent Gremio from being relegated to the second division.
“Douglas is an exceptional talent who has played at some of the biggest clubs in the world,” said LA Galaxy Technical Director Jovan Kirovski. “He is a big addition to our team, and we believe he will be a difference-maker in MLS.”
Costa has also featured prominently for the Brazilian national team. Costa has 31 caps for the Selecao and was on the 2015 Copa America and 2018 World Cup squads.
