After weeks and well over a month of speculation, the Los Angeles Galaxy finally got their man.
The Galaxy on Thursday finally got to announce the news they have been waiting for so long to announce, as they finalized a deal with Boca Juniors’ Cristian Pavon. The Argentine attacking player will join the Galaxy on a loan deal that will see him play out the remainder of the season with the Galaxy.
The Galaxy had long coveted Pavon for weeks, but the Galaxy and Boca Juniors haggled over how the deal would go down. One scenario had Boca Juniors receiving a percentage of a potential transfer fee should Pavon be successful and ultimately draw interest from European clubs. Ultimately, the two sides decided on a loan deal, with an option to extend the loan and and option to buy after the 2020 season, though the price will be a steep one, to the tune of $20 million.
The Galaxy had to get creative to make room for Pavon. With all of three of its Designated Player spots filled, the Galaxy made some more moves to free up some money, trading Emmanuel Boateng to DC United and acquiring additional money from Orlando City.
The Galaxy certainly felt it was worth it to jump through so man hoops to lad Pavon. in five years at Boca Juniors, Pavon appeared in 80 matches, scored 21 goals and drew interest from clubs such as Arsenal and AS Roma. Pavon’s recent performances however have been subpar, but the Galaxy are hoping that a reunion with head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto, whom coached Pavon at Boca Juniors, can revive Pavon, who enjoyed his greatest success under Schelotto.
