D.C. United’s quest for roster depth has led them back to Costa Rica. On Wednesday the club announced that they had signed Saprissa left-back Joseph Mora. Exact terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
Mora, 25, made 73 appearances over the course of three seasons with Saprissa. A product of the Herediano youth academy systems Mora also spent time with Uruguay de Coronado and Belen, both of whom are Costa Rican-based sides. Although he has yet to make an appearance with the senior Costa Rican national team he did play for their junior side at the 2009 under-17 World Cup and the 2011 under-20 World Cup.
With Taylor Kemp still out due to a sports hernia United has lacked that speedy left-back that Olsen normally covets. Although Mora has just one goal to his name during his time with Saprissa he was used in sort of a wing-back type role. His previous partnership with former Saprissa now United center-back should also help in the transition process. Mora will likely compete with Oniel Fisher for the left-back starting spot in Kemp’s absence.
D.C. began their 2018 campaign last week with a 1-1 draw against Orlando City SC. They will play Atlanta United FC at the Mercedes Benz Arena on Sunday (3pm EST, ESPN).
