It was deemed a must win match for the US Men’s National Team against Costa Rica Tuesday night, but ended up being a rout. 4-o was the final score for the squads second Copa America match.
The fireworks started early with a score from Clint Dempsey off a penalty kick. And continued on throughout the first half. A collective effort was key in this game as Dempsey was helped out greatly by the likes of Jermaine Jones, and Bobby Woods.
During last Friday’s opening match against Columbia, Jones struggled and eventually came off during the second half. This match, Jone’s high motor turned a great defensive play into a scoring opportunity at the 37’ mark.
“Its always nice to score goals, I hoped that the first one would of have went in.” Jones commented. “ I always say that I like to go forward and find good opportunities. When I saw the ball go in I was happy.”
Woods contributed to the scoring after a Clint Dempsey feed gave him an opportunity at the top of the box. Against Costa Rica’s 3-5-2 attack Woods was able to get put pressure on La Tricolor’s back line creating opportunities on the counter attack.
Saturday Klinnsman takes the squad into Philadelphia for a decisive final group stage match against Paraguay. The side will have a ton of momentum, and possibly an opportunity to advance deep into the tournament.
