How it works: Each week, Prost writers in Portland, Seattle and Vancouver will select three standout players on their team and players will get 1, 2 or 3 stars based on that selection. We’ll track this all season long to name the Cascadia Etihad Gatorade Amway Depends Windex Player of the Year presented by the all-new, all-reliable, very loud Dodge Hellcat. (We’re still working on the name, maybe.)

Some weeks, we’ll have a few separate posts detailing the selection of stars for an individual game. When that’s case, it’ll replace our longer, drier ratings pieces. Sometimes we’ll just post this rundown of the week’s selections and the overall table.

Here are our picks for Week 1!

Portland Timbers

Record: 1-0-0; 3 points

Result: 5-1 home win vs. Minnesota United FC

? ? ?	Fanendo Adi had two goals and led the charge in an explosive opening night-victory over expansion side Minnesota.
? ?	Diego Valeri also recorded a brace, and took home MLS Player of the Week honors as well.
?	David Guzman had an impressive outing in his Timbers debut. His partnership with Chara may be what unlocks the Timbers offense in 2017.

Seattle Sounders

Record: 0-1-0; 0 points

Result: 1-2 loss at Houston

? ? ?	Clint Dempsey scored in his return to professional soccer, simply the latest feat in what’s developed into one of the most preeminent careers in the American history of the sport.
? ?	Joevin Jones was the most dangerous Sounder on the pitch in Houston. In particular, the entire attack ran through him in the second half after Brian Schmetzer switched the tactics at the break.
?	Stefan Frei will get some flack for his misstep on Cubo Torres’ free kick goal, but Sounders wouldn’t have been at 0-0 if it weren’t for his heroics earlier. The Swiss-born UCLA product picked up right where he left off from MLS Cup.

Vancouver Whitecaps

Record: 0-0-1; 1 point

Result: 0-0 home draw vs. Philadelphia

? ? ?	David Ousted wasn’t called into action frequently, but was a key contributor in securing an important point for Vancouver following their CCL quarterfinal success on Thursday.
? ?	Christian Dean rotated in at center back to give Kendall Waston the night off, and made the most of the opportunity. He looks perfectly capable of stepping in and playing well when needed, and that’s valuable from a young CB who’s third on the depth chart.
?	Alphonso Davies continues to look like he doesn’t belong in MLS.
