The US and Germany faced off today in Boca Raton as the final round of the SheBelieves Cup got underway. Both teams came into the match with six points and quickly showed why they were top of the table. Germany held control early in the game, creating several chances that sent the US back-line scrambling. Germany was the first to break through in the 29th minute with a wicked ball put in near post by Mittag, despite being surrounded by US defenders.

The US responded quickly with Klingenberg sending it to Morgan who juggled it over the German defender and volleyed it in with her right to even the score in the 35th. The USA remained on the attack and had a second goal within six minutes when Mewis stole the ball at midfield and put it in off a deflection.

Germany struggled in the second half and after a series of US substitutions the Americans took clear control of the game. Germany spent the remainder of their time on the defense with only sporadic runs, none proving to be a threat. The USA held on for the win as well as the inaugural SheBelieves Cup title.

The tournament not only featured prime-time worthy matches, it also highlighted the skill of an injury free Alex Morgan who finally looks back to full strength. Other notable plays came from assists by US defender Meghan Kingenberg and young striker Mallory Pugh.

The SheBelieves Cup gave the top teams in women’s soccer an opportunity to play in a series of double headers hosted in three US cities. Three of the four teams will be competing in the Rio Olympics and have said they used this tournament as a test of fitness and ability to help them get ready for Rio.

The USWNT plays Colombia next. The game will be aired on FoxSoccer 1 Wednesday, April 6th at 7pm ET.
