The NWSL’s biggest derby did not disappoint in intensity, with both teams were 100% committed to the win, in a very hard fought tactical match. The Thorns displayed initiative, and at times great football via their forward Sophia Smith and defender Natalia Kuikka, but it was the OL Reign, who came out on top to earn three very valuable points by a minimum 1-0 win over their arch-rivals, the Portland Thorns. The solitary goal came on minute 74 with a strike via Rose Lavelle, after a wonderful one touch through ball by their playmaker, the brilliant, Jessica Fishlock.
The match marked the second game in which Providence Park was hardly at half capacity. The intensity of the chants and fan support was not the clamor we are used to, but a whisper. The fans showed once again their discomfort for the club handling of the abuse allegations. Silence and empty seats in what we can fairly call the one of the country’s most iconic soccer stadiums, was very loud shout of protest.
