A new era is about to start for the Houston Dynamo FC under new management and key additions in their roster. The Orange have a clear mission of being a winner team and reconnect to their fan base in every aspect of the game. The club was busy during the offseason doing some changes that will make this team competitive this 2022 MLS Season.
Let´s talk about their additions.
Key Additions:
Pat Onstad: Definitively, the main addition this offseason was hiring club´s legend Pat Onstad as General Manager. He came to Houston after having a successful front office career with the Columbus Crew. Onstad replaced Matt Jordan, who did not have much success with the team and create and big gap between the club and their fan base. Dynamo FC is sure that Pat Onstad will build a competitive and balance team as well as produce players from the academy, which will surely create a winner club.
Paulo Nagamura: Houston needed changes in their coaching position after two bad years under Tab Ramos. Ramos found in Houston his first coaching job in a professional team, but the team not only had limited personnel to perform well in the pitch, but solutions from the bench were limited as well. Now with Nagamura, Dynamo FC hopes a young and energize coach will be the solution. He had some success with Sporting KC II where he was coaching since 2018. Onstad and all Houston´s front office are confident he can lead the way for this new and ambitious project of building what a Dynamo team was when they won two MLS Cups.
Sebastian Ferreira: A position that Houston needed to address during the offseason was definitively the striker position. This is why the Orange went to get Paraguayan Sebastian Ferreira. He is a versatile and powerful striker that can provide Dynamo with the goals they struggled to get last season. If he adapted fast to the MLS rhythm and speed of the game as well as connect to Fafa Picault, he will help his side a lot in offense.
Steve Clark: Houston acquired Clark from the Portland Timbers to address the goalkeeper position. The club started Michael Nelson in the last games of the season in 2021, but they have struggled to find a player that can occupy that position long term. They hope Clark, who is already 35, can give them some stability there.
Key Losses:
Houston Dynamo maintained mostly the same roster they had last season, however, there were some players that left the club.
Boniek Garcia: The Honduran international and club legend left the Dynamo after 10 years with the club. Boniek, who is 37, returned to his former club Olimpia to play his last seasons as a professional player.
Marko Maric: After two years with Dynamo, the goalkeeper left the club after losing the starting job. He had little success with the team and he never really adapt to the league. He is now playing in the Greek league.
There are many rumors that Houston Dynamo is trying to sign Mexican international Hector Herrera as well as Brazilian Tiaguinho. If they do so, they will have the Star-caliber player (Herrera) the fans have been demanding and most importantly a competitive squad that can return to the playoffs and battle for another MLS Cup.
We will see if this new era for the Dynamo starts good this 2022 MLS season.
