Houston bounces back to get a much-needed win against SKC

Houston, TX-The Houston Dynamo came back in the second half to get an enormous 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night . With the win Houston held on to the fifth spot in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference with just two matches to play ahead of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

In a match that was postponed due to Hurricane Harvey, a shorth-handed Houston team fought back, led by Argentine Tomas Martinez, who scored the equalizer at the 63th minute, to give the three points to the Orange.

Sporting Kansas City started the matched with intensity and kept the pressure over the Dynamo on all over of the field. They created some opportunities on attack, but were not as clear as they wanted to be. Even though the goal chances were not that clear for the visiting side, Jimmy Medranda scored at the 33th minute when his shot from outside the box beat Houston’s goalkeeper Tyler Deric. That was the 0-1 partial at the half.

In the second half, knowing they needed the win, Houston modified their game plan which seemed to be to centralize the game and keep the possession of the ball. Houston’s coach Wilmer Cabrera made a crucial change when he sent in ‘Cubo’ Torres to the field. This sub, injected a positive message to his players. We need to remember that Erick Torres’ dad passed away last Friday due to leukemia, so his teammates wanted to play and get the win to honor his dad. It was until the 63th minute that the Dynamo were able to score via Martinez after a great played of AJ De La Garza. Fourteen minutes later, the Dynamo scored the final 2-1 when SKC defender Erik Palmer-Brown scored in his own goal, after trying to deflect a ball.

With the win, Houston in now on fifth place in the standings. The Orange (12-10-10, 46 points) needs only three points to secure a spot in the MLS Playoffs. Sporting KC (12-8-12, 48 points), on the other hand, is in second place. These two teams will face each other again this weekend, but now they will play at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.
