A new era begins in Houston as real estate investor Ted Segal was announced as the new majority owner of the Houston Dynamo FC and Houston Dash.
NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird and MLS commissioner Don Garber were part of the introduction of Segal as majority investor, which includes the MLS team Dynamo FC, the NWSL Houston Dash and the leasing rights to BBVA Stadium. In addition to his ownership role, Segal will serve on the MLS Board of Governors. Also, the club announced that Gabriel Brener, Oscar De La Hoya, Ben Guill and James Harden will retain minority stakes in the Club and work closely with Mr. Segal to return the Dynamo and Dash to the top of their respective tables.
“My commitment is to be an active and involve owner who will provide the resources needed to have winning clubs. I will look for experts and collaborate with them to create winning teams. I want to make the Dash and Dynamo the number one team in their respective leagues and perhaps globally”.
As an owner that wants to be involved in the community, Segal added that he will be joining the Houston 2026 World Cup Host City committee.
He said in a statement: “As someone with a lifelong passion for soccer, having the opportunity to invest in professional soccer in Houston – a dynamic, diverse and growing city with such a storied history in professional sports is truly exciting,” said Mr. Segal. “The interest and passion for soccer in Houston are clear. The Dynamo and Dash have incredibly devoted fans that have supported championship clubs, Houston is a go-to destination for hosting major international soccer games, and there’s a great group of leaders making a strong case for Houston to deservedly serve as a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. I am honored to join the Club and its great supporters as the sport continues to ascend in the region and throughout the United States.”
During a press conference at BBVA Stadium, he said: “An example of how I want to provide the adequate resources to become a winning team we are giving a 3-year contract extension to defender Tim Parker and we are signing Teenage Hadebe from the Turkish league. In addition, it was announced that Jamey Rootes, who used to be part of the Texans organization from the NFL, is joining the club as CEO”.
As Don Garber mentioned, Houston is a soccer sleeping giant and he recognizes that Segal as a new owner has plans to give the city of Houston a winning team.
Certainly, this new direction the club is taking shows some hope for the loyal Dynamo fans, who want to have a winning and competitive team again. Also, it is great news for the Dash that will have a committed owner who wants to keep the team as competitive as possible to achieve more championships.
