The Houston team tried to extend what they did last season and continue with their dominance at the Shell where they got most of their points that gave them a spot at the MLS Playoffs. On the other hand, Sporting KC came to Houston with the idea of starting the season with three points against one of its main rivals.
The control of the match was pretty even. Houston was the team that tried to attack, but their opportunities were not as clear as they would want to. Dynamo’s struggles were not a surprise. Team captain Hector Herrera as well as French international Amine Bassi and forward Sebastian Ferreira were not part of the match. Also, Franco Escobar was out for the match. Leaving coach Ben Olsen with many young players who are looking for an opportunity to play in the league.
The away side, Sporting KC, emphasized its gameplan on being strong in defense and using their speed to find the goal. Mexican forward Alan Pulido along with Johnny Russell and Daniel Salloi were the main attackers for the visitors. Even though they are the key players of the squad, it was until coach Peter Vermes made some substitutions.
The first goal of the match was scored at the 61st minute when Erik Thommy’s shot beat Houston’s goalkeeper Steve Clark. It looked like the visitors has everything set to get the win, but eight minutes later, Gabel Segal, who made his MLS debut with the Dynamo, scored the final 1-1.
Now, Dynamo will stay home as they will prepare for the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup versus St. Louis CITY SC scheduled for Tuesday, February 27. The Orange is down 2-1 in the aggregate after losing in Missouri in the first match. In addition to that match, Houston will remain home to face NY Red Bulls on Saturday, March 2.
