In an untypically cold afternoon in Houston, the USWNT finished their two-game series against Mexico at BBVA Compass Stadium with a dominating win. Even though the Americans eventually scored six goals, they had to comeback from a 1-2 deficit to beat a limited Mexican team that is preparing for the CONCACAF Championship, which will take place at the end of this year in the USA.
The highlight of the match was when former Houston Dash Carli Lloyd scored her 100th goal with the National Team. Lloyd, who was very critical about her trade to Houston and was recently traded to Sky Blue FC, became the sixth woman in USA history to achieve this mark.
The match was a surprisingly good one, especially the first half. Washington Spirit forward Mallory Pugh scored first for the Americans who were coming to this match after beating the same Mexican team 4-1 on Thursday night in Florida. After that goal, the home team dominated the match until ‘El Tri’ scored via Monica Ocampo from a corner kick. Her shot was not controlled by the Houston Dash, and fan favorite, Jane Campbell for the surprising tie-up goal. Only seven minutes after the equalizer, Kiana Palacios of Mexico scored the shocking goal to put her side up after another corner kick.
Jill Ellis’ girls came right back to try and equalize the score for the locals, and sure enough, Lindsay Horan scored to make it 2-2 when she headed the ball to beat ‘El Tri’ goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago in the 24th minute.
Ten minutes after Horan’s goal, Carli Lloyd made history when she scored the lead goal for USA. That’s when the real celebration started in Houston where over 15,000 fans attended the match.
But the celebration continued right before the end of the first half when Alex Morgan scored to put the USA up 4-2.
Mexico struggled physically and mentally in the second half. They committed many little mistakes that helped the US to create more opportunities on the attack. Their fifth goal would come via Megan Rapinoe in the 64th minute with Alex Morgan scoring her second goal just four minutes later for the final score 6-2.
After the match fans and players enjoyed a celebration video for Carli Lloyd while players share autographs and took pictures with fans who were supporting and applauded both teams for the great match they had.
