In this week’s video of Hinton Unleashed, Prost Amerika columnist Alan Hinton discussed Seattle Sounders FC’s first league win of the year, Jordan Morris expectations, alcohol issues in soccer and Abby Wambach’s recent arrest for DUI.
Sounders’ first win of the year
“Clint Dempsey had a great week…He’s a proven player.”
The Sounders ended their three-game winless streak to start the season with a 1-0 win over Montreal Impact. Forward Clint Dempsey notched the winning tally in the 79th minute.
Last week, Hinton predicted a Seattle victory, and felt Dempsey would be a key contributor based on his performance in the U.S.’ 4-0 win over Guatemala on March 29.
Jordan Morris expectations
“I think Jordy Morris is going to be fine. He just needs a couple of goals.”
Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid took the highly touted rookie Jordan Morris out of the starting lineup in the matchup against Montreal. He was critical of the media hype and high expectations placed on the 21-year-old forward.
According to Hinton, Schmid knows how to handle youngsters. He’s striving keep Morris’ confidence up and reduce expectations from fans and media.
Alcohol issues in soccer and Abby Wambach
“Abby Wambach: I admire her. She came out and said, ‘I did wrong.’ I thought that was very good of her to do that.”
As a player in England’s First Division, player and coach in the old North American Soccer League, Hinton knows the pitfalls of alcohol in soccer. He mentioned the impact drinking had on the careers of George Best, his former Derby County manager Brian Clough, Paul Gascoigne and Alan Hudson, a player he coached with the NASL Sounders.
Hinton thought retired USWNT forward Abby Wambach was courageous in addressing her recent DUI arrest in Portland, Oregon. She made an judgment error and admitted her mistake.
