After returning from off season surgery, Sounders FC legend Alan Hinton weighed in on the big issues in the first 2015 installment of Hinton Unleashed with John Zielonka.
He commended the Sounders players for their choice of Brad Evans as their player union representative, describing him as a ‘sensible even par person’.
One of the issues on the Players Union wishlist is free agency and Hinton observes: “Free agency suits the big clubs better than the smaller clubs.”
He reveals that he told his players not to go out on strike in 1979 when head coach at the Tulsa Roughnecks, noting “strikes are ugly or can get ugly.”
Hinton also admits that the disparity in wages between the top 1% and the rest is an issue, a very interesting thought as a club with some of the highest disparities in the league.
He applauds the change at the General Manager level calling the hiring of Garth Lagerwey, ‘a smart move‘.
Talking about the fate of the Sounders’ prospects, he has a mixed warning:
“Sounders don’t need to make a lot of change but historically if you don’t upgrade, you go backwards.”
He noted however that there was still time for players to be brought in.
