Group E: Korea Republic joins Brazil in Round of 16

Brazil 1:0 Costa Rica

Brazil defeated Costa Rica on Wednesday, ending the Ticas World Cup run, while earning the maximum nine points in Group E.

Already guaranteed first place in the group prior to this match, Brazil rested Marta, along with a few other key players. Still, the Brazilians dominated possession and outshot Costa Rica 20 to 3.

Ticas goalkeeper Dinnia Diaz kept the match close, by making some key saves, but Raquel put one past Diaz in the 83rd minute to give Brazil the 1-0 win.

Brazil takes on Australia on Sunday, June 21.

Korea Republic 2:1 Spain

Korea Republic came from behind to defeat Spain 2-1 and to advance to the knockout round.
Veronica Boquete knocked in a cross from Marta Corredera in the 29th minute to give Spain the 1-0 lead. They continued to dominate and attack, but squandered several chances in the first half.

A recharged Korea Republic returned after the break and Cho Soyun headed in the equalizer in the 53rd minute. While Spain continued with a strong attack, it was Korea Republic that broke the tie, with Kim Sooyun scoring the winner in the 78th minute.

Spain had a last gasp chance to equalize with a free kick in stoppage time, but Sonia Bermudez hit the cross bar, ending Spain’s chances of advancing.

Korea Republic will face France on Sunday, June 21.
