The New England Revolution returned to play on Thursday, facing off against Eastern Conference rival the Philadelphia Union. The Revolution would look to avenge the 1-0 loss to Philadelphia that ultimately ended their run in the “MLS Is Back” Tournament. Matt Polster would make his debut for New England, looking to add some threat in replace of the injured Carles Gil.
A strong start by the Revs would have them see multiple chances in the early stages of the match. It looked as if the Revs were going to break through in the 13th minute of play, but the close range shot by forward Adam Buksa would strike off of the woodwork and away from danger. Goalkeeper Matt Turner did not see a lot of action, but was up to the task when called upon, making a great stop in the 36th minute. While creating a flurry of chances throughout the half, the Revs were unable to find the back of the net and would go into halftime 0-0.
Sharp passing and good combination plays would allow them to take 7 shots in the first half. Gustavo Bou, Adam Buksa and Christian Penilla finished the half with 2 shots a piece.
An evenly matched second half saw both teams generate a number of chances. However, through the first 30 min of the second stanza, neither team was able to find the back of the net.
Despite a strong surge to finish the match, neither team would be able to break the deadlock. The Revolution grab a point, giving them 7 on the season and putting them in a tie for 6th place with the Montreal Impact.
Goals continue to come at a rarity for the Revs, who extend their scoreless game streak to 3. Up next for the Revs is a Tuesday night matchup against D.C. United at 7:00PM.
