Vancouver Whitecaps 0-Sporting KC 3
In an essential must win game if they hope to have any playoff aspirations, the Vancouver White Caps came out flat in a home match against Sporting KC. With this three-nil loss to Sporting, the White Caps have slid to the bottom of the Western Conference table, having been outscored in their last three MLS matches 10 to 1.
Sporting KC controlled play for much of the first half, controlling most of the run of play, culminating with the first goal of the match in the 24th minute from an own goal deflection off of Vancouver’s Ali Adnan. Kansas City forward Gerso Fernandes, who would prove to be Vancouver’s boogeyman tonight, whipped the ball into the goal box from the right side of the penalty box and deflected off of Adnan in the goal box and into the back of the net, putting the visitors up a goal into halftime.
Coming out of half time, Vancouver seemed to have some spirit to them in the opening minutes of the second half. The White Caps looked to get back into the match, most notably off of a free kick in the 48th minute from midfielder Hwang In-Beom that KC’s keeper, Tim Melia was able to parry away.
The missed chance came back to bite Vancouver, as Kansas City was able to double their lead 11 minutes later. A poor clearance from Vancouver keeper Zac MacMath was expertly intercepted by Fernandes 15 feet outside of the box. Fernandes slotted the ball to midfielder Felipe Gutierrez who slipped the ball past the keeper into the bottom right corner of the net.
With a two goal lead, Kansas City was able to hold off the pressure from a Vancouver side and finally put the nail in the coffin off a Fernandes goal in the 90th minute who slotted home a Kristztian Nemeth cross into the back of the net.
The Bissau-Guinean Fernandes was the clear man of the match for Sporting KC either assisting or scoring in all three of Kansas City’s goals against Vancouver, using his impressive pace to put the Whitecaps on their backfoot. Sporting will hope he continues to maintain this form in their matchup at home against FC Dallas on Saturday.
Vancouver on the other hand will hope to finally end their nightmarish skid on Saturday as they welcome San Jose to the BC Place.
