Vancouver Whitecaps 0-Seattle Sounders 0
Saturday wasn’t National Goalkeepers Day but in Vancouver, British Columbia it might as well have been. In the first Cascadia Cup clash of the season it was the goalkeepers that put on the standout performances. Despite some great goal-scoring opportunities Maxime Crepeau of the Vancouver Whitecaps and Stefan Frei of the Seattle Sounders were the true standouts, each earning a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw.
Both Crepeau and Frei made three saves on the day with most of them coming in the second half. Sounders midfielder Gustav Svensson had their best crack at goal when he hit a bullet from distance that was inevitably puched away by Crepeau. As for the Whitecaps they almost walked away with three points late after Joaquin Ardaiz had a breakaway chance in injury time. His shot was saved by a diving Frei and the ensuing rebound that was scooped up by Inbeom Hwang was knocked away by Kim Kee Hee.
With draw the Sounders remain unbeaten (3-0-1, 10 points) while the Whitecaps are still winless (0-3-1, 1 point). The Whitecaps will hope to get their first win on Friday night when they host the Los Angeles Galaxy (10PM EST/7PM PST) while Seattle get a few more days off before Real Salt Lake come to the Link on Sunday (10PM EST/7PM PST).
