Toronto FC 5-Los Angeles Galaxy 3
Those who tuned in on Saturday night to watch a defensive masterpiece between Toronto FC and Los Angeles Galaxy were sorely disappointed. However, those who were looking to watch two of the best attacking sides in Major League Soccer were very pleased as TFC and the Galaxy combined to score eight, with The Reds earning the 5-3 win.
With both sides on the outside looking in at a MLS Cup Playoff spot there was a sense of urgency in the air at BMO Field. At first it appeared as if Toronto might walk away with the critical three points after they marched out to a very early 3-0 lead. Midfielder Victor Vazquez (5′) and forwards Jozy Altidore (16′) and Sebastian Giovinco (36′) supplied the three goals giving Toronto what appeared to be an insurmountable lead.
Oh, were they wrong. Just before halftime Galaxy forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic finished off a chip into the box by Jonathan Dos Santos with an impressive flick that went off of the post and into the back of the net. That goal seemed to give the Galaxy a bit of a boost as in the second half they leveled the score thanks to goals from forward Ola Kamara (54′) and defender Rolf Feltscher (58′).
Toronto though were not finished as Jonathan Osorio pushed his side ahead again with his goal in the 75th minute. Jay Chapman (90+4′) gave TFC an insurance goal in injury time to seal the result.
With the win, Toronto (8-14-6, 30 points) keep their playoff hopes alive in the Eastern Conference. The defending MLS Cup champions currently sit in ninth place, nine points back of the Montreal Impact (12-14-3, 39 points) for the final playoff spot.
As for the Galaxy (10-11-8, 38 points) the loss prevents them from gaining any ground on the Portland Timbers (12-8-8, 44 points) for the sixth and final playoff spot in the West. They still currently stand six points behind their Cascadian foes with Portland having a game advantage.
