Philadelphia Union 3-D.C. United 2
The Union stalwarts sighed heavily at the seven minute mark after United’s Zoltan Steiber scored, as if to foreshadow another Union 2-0 loss. Indeed, the first Union goal attributed to Ilsinho late in the first half looked to have deflected off United defender Frederic Brillant. Ilsinho was all business, quickly depositing the ball at midfield for the last minutes of the first half.
Things started looking up in the second half as Haris Medunjanin lofted a diagonal pass to Alejandro Bedoya, who headed a cross to CJ Sapong. Sapong’s basketball bounce header pushed the Union ahead at 2-1. Bedoya seemed elated and celebrated the goal even more than Sapong. The ping pong game continued as United’s Darren Mattocks scored off of assists from Zoltan Stieber and Bruno Miranda just ten minutes later, leaving the score 2-2. The Union’s breakthrough occurred a few minutes later on Borek Dockal’s first MLS goal, which appeared to be headed directly at United keeper Steve Clark, but must have been a hard shot with an upward lift The final score was 3-2 with a win at home for the Union.
