Seattle Sounders 2-San Jose Earthquakes 2
Through the years the Seattle Sounders-San Jose Earthquakes rivalry has been known for producing physical matches and close matches. Wednesday night’s edition of the Heritage Match was no different. Despite going down two goals early the Sounders rallied earning a point in a 2-2 draw in front of 37,722 at Century Link Field.
Shea Salinas (34′ and 53′) scored a brace in the first hour to give the Earthquakes the early lead. But a Kevin Leerdam header in the 65th minute gave the home side a bit of a spark in the final third. Before the Quakes could recover Seattle struck again with Harry Shipp finishing off a Kim Kee-Hee cross just two minutes later. Both sides continued to work for a breakthrough but Earthquakes goalkeeper Daniel Vega and Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei held their own to preserve the result.
By rescuing a point late Seattle (5-1-2, 17 points) held on to the number three spot in the Western Conference. They won’t have much time to gather themselves as they will host LAFC on Sunday (3:30 PM EST, Noon PST, FS1).
As for San Jose (2-5-1, 7 points) this will very much feel like a loss especially after the club’s convincing win over Sporting Kansas City last weekend. They will continue their road trip down in the Lone Star state on Saturday as they face FC Dallas (3:30pm EST/12:30 PST).
