San Jose Earthquakes 1-Sporting Kansas City 5
After only narrowly defeating Orlando City SC 1-0 last week the big question for Sporting Kansas City fans was: Can they put away the teams that they are supposed to beat? The answer after Saturday night seems to be yes. Needing three points to claim the top spot in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference and perhaps have a chance at the Supporters Shield SKC defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 5-1 at Avaya Stadium.
Felipe Gutierrez(18′), Gerso Fernandes (23′ and 86′), Ike Opara (42′), and Krisztian Nemeth (67′) supplied the goals for Sporting while Danny Hoesen knocked in San Jose’s lone goal in the 80th minute. With win and FC Dallas’ (14-6-8, 50 points) 0-0 draw with the Columbus Crew, SKC (15-7-6, 51 points) move into first place in the Western Conference. They are also currently in third place for the Supporters Shield, behind Atlanta United FC (17-5-6, 57 points) and the New York Red Bulls (17-7-4, 54 points).
